Ram VIN decoder

Paste the 17-character VIN from your Ram truck or van to see how Stellantis registered it with NHTSA: model year, cab and bed, engine, drivetrain, weight rating and assembly plant, plus every safety recall NHTSA lists for that year and model. Free, no signup.

0/17

Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.

Ram WMI codes

The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 11 of them for Ram: each code below is one whose NHTSA record lists Ram as a make. Every one of these codes is also listed for other makes, such as Dodge, Jeep and Fiat, so the first three characters alone do not tell you a vehicle is a Ram. They were issued across 4 countries: Canada, Italy, Mexico and United States (USA). They span 3 vehicle types, listed separately below.

The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.

Ram or Dodge Ram?

Ram became a separate brand starting with the 2011 model year. Earlier pickups were sold as the Dodge Ram, usually start with 1D7 or 3D7, and decode with Dodge as the make. That is correct, not an error.

Common Ram models

Some of the Ram models you are most likely to be decoding, as NHTSA spells them. Recall searches by year, make and model need that exact spelling.

  • 1500
  • 1500 Classic — NHTSA's vPIC and recall records list no separate 1500 Classic model, so search recalls under 1500.
  • 2500
  • 3500
  • Chassis cab (3500, 4500 and 5500) — vPIC lists these as 3500, 4500 and 5500.
  • ProMaster — vPIC lists ProMaster 1500, 2500 and 3500; NHTSA recall records file them under ProMaster.
  • ProMaster City — vPIC spells it Promaster City.

Notable Ram recalls since 2018

A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Ram vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.

Seat belts: second-row buckle anchors

Vehicles: Certain 2019-2026 Ram 1500 vehicles.

The second-row center and left-side seat belt buckle anchors may not have been installed correctly, so they may not hold an occupant properly in a crash. NHTSA's record says these trucks do not meet the federal standard for seat belt anchorages.

Dealers inspect the anchors and attach them to the body structure as needed at no charge; owner letters were due to be mailed 18 August 2026.

NHTSA campaign 26V495000, reported 30 July 2026, about 1,271,294 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Structure: tailgate strikers

Vehicles: Certain 2019-2022 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups.

Misaligned tailgate strikers can stop the tailgate latching properly, so it may open while driving and spill unsecured cargo onto the road, raising the risk of a crash.

Dealers inspect the striker alignment and adjust it as needed at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 22V904000, reported 8 December 2022, about 1,224,078 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Service brakes: anti-lock brake module software

Vehicles: Certain 2019 and 2021-2024 Ram 1500 vehicles.

A software fault in the anti-lock brake module can switch off electronic stability control, which raises the risk of a crash. NHTSA's record says these trucks do not meet the federal stability control standard.

Dealers update the anti-lock brake module software at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 24V653000, reported 5 September 2024, about 1,025,432 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Wheels: lug nuts and studs

Vehicles: Certain 2012-2021 Ram 3500 pickups and 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs.

The owner's and service manuals gave a torque figure that could lead to the flanged lug nuts being over-tightened. That can break a wheel stud and let a wheel come off, which can cause a crash.

Dealers update the torque figure in the manuals and inspect the wheel studs, replacing them as needed, at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 21V398000, reported 27 May 2021, about 447,985 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Reading the rest of a Ram VIN

Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Ram assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.

See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.

Where the VIN is on a Ram

On a Ram, look at the lower driver-side corner of the windshield and the label on the driver's door jamb. The VIN is also printed on the registration and the insurance card.
