Nissan VIN decoder
Decode any Nissan VIN for manufacturer specifications and NHTSA safety recall campaigns, and see which World Manufacturer Identifiers NHTSA has on record for Nissan.
Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.
Nissan WMI codes
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 18 of them for Nissan. They were issued across 4 countries: Japan, Mexico, United Kingdom (UK) and United States (USA). A few carry no stated country. They span 5 vehicle types, listed separately below.
The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.

Notable Nissan recalls since 2018
A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Nissan vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.
Latches: hood latch
Vehicles: Certain 2013-2018 Nissan Altima vehicles. The campaign also covers vehicles already repaired under recall 16V-029.
The secondary hood latch can corrode and stick in the unlatched position, so if the primary latch is released by accident the hood is not held closed. The hood could then open unexpectedly while driving, raising the risk of a crash.
Dealers install a stronger release spring in the hood release lever, add a warning label near the secondary latch and supply an owner's manual addendum on lubricating the latch, at no charge.
Back-over prevention: rearview camera
Vehicles: Certain 2018-2019 Nissan vehicles, including Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Versa and Versa Note (years vary by model); the campaign also covers some 2019 Nissan GT-R and NV200 Taxi and some 2018-2019 Infiniti models.
The back-up camera and display settings can be changed so that the rearview image no longer appears, and the vehicle keeps that setting the next time it is put in reverse. Without a rearview image the driver can miss what is behind the vehicle, which raises the risk of a crash.
Dealers update the back-up camera settings software at no charge.
Electrical system: ignition key
Vehicles: Certain 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles with a jackknife-style (folding) key.
The folding key can collapse into its closed position while the vehicle is being driven. If the driver then knocks the key, the vehicle can shut off unexpectedly, raising the risk of a crash, and the air bags may not deploy as intended.
Dealers insert a spacer into the folding key's slot at no charge.
Engine: internal mechanical parts (bearings)
Vehicles: Certain 2019-2020 Nissan Altima and 2021-2024 Rogue vehicles with 1.5L three-cylinder or 2.0L four-cylinder VC-Turbo engines; the campaign also covers 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50 and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles.
The engine bearings may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine failure. An engine that fails while driving raises the risk of a crash, and a bearing failure that breaks through the engine block can release hot oil and start a fire.
Dealers reprogram the engine control module software at no charge.
Power train: automatic transmission
Vehicles: Certain 2020-2023 Nissan Titan and 2020-2022 Frontier vehicles; NHTSA's summary also names 2023 Nissan Z vehicles.
The transmission parking pawl may not engage when the driver shifts into park. A vehicle that is not held in park can roll away and cause a crash.
Dealers reprogram the transmission control module (and, on 2020-2022 Titan, the engine control module too) at no charge; until then owners are told to set the parking brake every time they park.
Reading the rest of a Nissan VIN
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Nissan assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.
See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.
Where the VIN is on a Nissan
On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
