Terms of use

A free tool provided as-is, drawing on public government data. Useful, but not a substitute for inspecting a vehicle.

Last updated 12 September 2026.

Accepting these terms

Using RunThatVIN means you accept these terms. If you do not, please do not use the site.

What the service is

RunThatVIN decodes vehicle identification numbers using NHTSA's public vPIC catalogue and reports safety recall campaigns from NHTSA's recall database. It is free and requires no account.

Accuracy

We pass through what the government databases return. We do not edit, supplement or infer. Manufacturers file this data themselves, and it is sometimes incomplete or wrong at the source. A missing or incorrect field here usually means a missing or incorrect filing there.

Recall information is indexed by year, make and model, not by individual vehicle. A recall campaign listed on this site may already have been performed on the specific car you are looking at. We cannot tell you which recalls remain outstanding on a particular vehicle, and we never claim to. Only NHTSA's VIN lookup holds those completion records.

What this is not

This is not a vehicle history report. We have no access to title records, title brands, accident history, theft records, odometer readings, lien records or ownership history.

It is not a substitute for a physical inspection, a professional pre-purchase inspection, or a paid history report from a licensed provider. Do not make a purchase decision on the strength of this tool alone.

Nothing here is legal, financial or mechanical advice.

Acceptable use

Please do not attempt to scrape the site, use automated tools to make bulk requests, circumvent rate limiting, or resell access. If you need programmatic VIN decoding, NHTSA's API is free, public and documented — use it directly rather than through us.

Do not use this site to harass, stalk or investigate an individual.

Availability

The service is provided as-is, with no guarantee of uptime, accuracy or fitness for any purpose. It depends on third-party government APIs that may be slow, unavailable or changed without notice. We may modify or discontinue any part of it at any time.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Pixoware Studio, LLC is not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of this site or reliance on information it displays. This includes decisions made about buying, selling, repairing or insuring a vehicle.

Intellectual property
