Notable Toyota recalls since 2018

A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Toyota vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.

Fuel system: fuel pump

Vehicles: Certain 2017-2020 Toyota and Lexus vehicles. Toyota models listed include 4Runner, Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Corolla Hatchback, Highlander, Land Cruiser, RAV4, Sequoia, Sienna, Tacoma and Tundra (years vary by model). This campaign expands recall 20V-012.

The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank can fail. If it does, the engine can stall while the vehicle is being driven, raising the risk of a crash.

Dealers replace the fuel pump assembly with an improved part at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 20V682000, reported 4 November 2020, about 1,525,742 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Air bags: occupant classification sensor

Vehicles: Certain 2020-2022 Toyota Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, RAV4 and Sienna (including hybrid versions) and Lexus ES and RX vehicles.

The occupant classification sensor in the front passenger seat can develop a short circuit. That can keep the front passenger air bag from deploying in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Dealers inspect the sensor and replace it as needed at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 23V865000, reported 20 December 2023, about 999,901 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Electrical system: instrument cluster/panel

Vehicles: Certain 2023-2025 Toyota and Lexus vehicles, including Toyota Crown, Crown Signia, Highlander, Grand Highlander, RAV4, RAV4 plug-in hybrid, GR Corolla, Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry Hybrid and Venza Hybrid (years vary by model).

A software error at startup can leave the instrument panel blank, so it does not show vehicle speed or the brake system and tire pressure warning lights. Missing that information can increase the risk of a crash.

The instrument panel software is updated over the air at no charge; on plug-in hybrids, dealers inspect the panel and replace it or update its software.

NHTSA campaign 25V595000, reported 11 September 2025, about 591,377 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Engine: internal mechanical parts (main bearings)

Vehicles: Certain 2022-2023 Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX 600 vehicles with the V35A engine.

Machining debris left from manufacturing can contaminate the engine and cause the main bearings to fail. A failed bearing can stall the engine and cut drive power, which raises the risk of a crash.

Dealers replace the engine assembly at no charge; a later campaign, 25V767000, expands this recall to more vehicles, including some 2024 models.

NHTSA campaign 24V381000, reported 30 May 2024, about 102,092 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Engine and engine cooling

Vehicles: Certain 2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid, 2020 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2020 Avalon Hybrid and 2020 Lexus ES 300h vehicles with 2.5L four-cylinder engines.

Porosity in the engine castings can lead to cracks that let coolant leak inside or outside the engine. The engine can overheat and stall, and resulting engine damage can cause an oil leak that raises the risk of fire.

Dealers inspect the engine and replace the engine block or the engine as needed at no charge.

Reading the rest of a Toyota VIN

Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Toyota assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.

Where the VIN is on a Toyota

On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
