Hyundai VIN decoder
Decode any Hyundai VIN for manufacturer specifications and NHTSA safety recall campaigns, and see which World Manufacturer Identifiers NHTSA has on record for Hyundai.
Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.
Hyundai WMI codes
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 15 of them for Hyundai. They were issued across 4 countries: Mexico, Singapore, South Korea and United States (USA). A few carry no stated country. They span 4 vehicle types, listed separately below.
The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.

Some of the Hyundai models you are most likely to be decoding, as NHTSA spells them. Recall searches by year, make and model need that exact spelling.
- Elantra
- Sonata
- Tucson
- Santa Fe — NHTSA recall records list Santa Fe Hybrid and Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid as separate models.
- Santa Cruz
- Palisade
- Kona
- Venue
- Ioniq 5
- Ioniq 6
- Ioniq 9
Notable Hyundai recalls since 2018
A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Hyundai vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.
Brakes: anti-lock brake (ABS) module
Vehicles: Certain older Hyundai vehicles: 2011-2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe and Sonata Hybrid, 2012-2015 Accent, Azera and Veloster, 2013-2015 Elantra Coupe and Santa Fe, 2014-2015 Equus, 2010-2012 Veracruz, 2010-2013 Tucson, 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell and 2013 Santa Fe Sport.
The ABS module can leak brake fluid internally and short circuit. That can start a fire in the engine compartment, whether the vehicle is parked or being driven.
Dealers replace the ABS fuse at no charge; until then owners are told to park outside and away from buildings.
Brakes: anti-lock brake hydraulic control unit
Vehicles: Certain 2016-2021 Hyundai Tucson vehicles (the recall began with 2019-2021 models and was expanded to 2016-2018 models in December 2020).
The anti-lock brake hydraulic electronic control unit can corrode inside and short circuit. That can start an engine compartment fire, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.
Dealers replace the control unit's fuse, and update the electronic stability control software on 2019-2021 models, at no charge; owners are told to park outside until the repair is done.
Trailer hitch wiring
Vehicles: Certain 2019-2023 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2021-2023 Santa Fe Hybrid, 2022-2023 Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid and 2022-2023 Santa Cruz vehicles with a factory-installed or dealer-sold tow hitch harness. This campaign expands recall 22V-633.
Water can collect on the circuit board of the tow hitch harness module and cause a short circuit. The short can start a fire while the vehicle is parked or driven.
Dealers install a new fuse and wire extension kit as needed at no charge; until then owners are told to park outside and away from buildings.
Seat belts: buckle assembly
Vehicles: Certain 2020-2025 Hyundai Palisade vehicles.
The seat belt buckles for the driver, front passenger and second-row window seats may fail to latch. A belt that is not latched may not restrain the occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Dealers replace the buckle assemblies at no charge, with final remedy letters mailed in phases from June to December 2026; until the repair, occupants are told to push the belt firmly into the buckle and tug it to confirm it is latched.
Electrical system: charging control unit (12-volt battery)
Vehicles: Certain 2022-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 2023-2025 Ioniq 6 vehicles; the campaign also covers Genesis GV60, GV70 Electrified and G80 Electrified vehicles. This campaign expands and replaces recall 24V-204.
The integrated charging control unit can be damaged and stop charging the 12-volt battery. That can cause a loss of drive power, raising the risk of a crash.
Dealers inspect the charging control unit and its fuse, replace them as needed and update the unit's software, at no charge; vehicles repaired under 24V-204 need the new remedy.
Reading the rest of a Hyundai VIN
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Hyundai assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.
See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.
Where the VIN is on a Hyundai
On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
