Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.

Honda WMI codes

The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 45 of them for Honda. Acura vehicles are built by Honda, so some of these codes belong to Acura models. They were issued across 12 countries: Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom (UK), United States (USA) and Vietnam. A few carry no stated country. They span 4 vehicle types, listed separately below.

The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.

Common Honda models

Some of the Honda models you are most likely to be decoding, as NHTSA spells them. Recall searches by year, make and model need that exact spelling.

  • Accord
  • Civic
  • Civic Type R
  • CR-V — NHTSA recall records list CR-V Hybrid as a separate model.
  • HR-V
  • Pilot
  • Passport
  • Odyssey
  • Ridgeline
  • Prologue
  • Insight
  • Fit

Notable Honda recalls since 2018

A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Honda vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.

Fuel system: fuel pump

Vehicles: Certain 2013-2023 Honda and Acura vehicles. Honda models listed include Accord, Civic, CR-V, Fit, HR-V, Insight, Odyssey, Passport, Pilot and Ridgeline (years vary by model). This campaign expands recalls 20V-314 and 21V-215.

The fuel pump inside the fuel tank can fail. A failed pump can stall the engine while driving, which raises the risk of a crash.

Dealers replace the fuel pump module at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 23V858000, reported 18 December 2023, about 2,490,460 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Steering: gearbox

Vehicles: Certain 2022-2025 Honda Civic (including hatchback, hybrid and Type R versions), 2023-2025 CR-V, CR-V Hybrid and HR-V, and 2023-2025 Acura Integra vehicles (years vary by model).

The steering gearbox may have been built incorrectly, creating excess friction inside it. The extra friction can make the vehicle harder to steer, raising the risk of a crash.

Dealers replace the worm gear spring and add or redistribute grease as needed, at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 24V744000, reported 3 October 2024, about 1,693,199 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Air bags: front passenger occupant classification sensor

Vehicles: Certain 2020-2022 Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, Fit, HR-V, Insight, Odyssey, Passport, Pilot and Ridgeline and Acura MDX, RDX and TLX vehicles (years vary by model).

The weight sensor in the front passenger seat can crack and short circuit, so it may fail to switch off the passenger air bag when it should. An air bag that deploys when it should have been switched off increases the risk of injury in a crash.

Dealers replace the seat weight sensor at no charge; a later campaign, 26V332000, expands this recall to more vehicles.

NHTSA campaign 24V064000, reported 1 February 2024, about 750,114 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Fuel system: high-pressure fuel pump

Vehicles: Certain 2023-2024 Honda Accord and Accord Hybrid, 2023-2025 CR-V Hybrid, and 2025 Civic and Civic Hybrid vehicles.

The high-pressure fuel pump can crack and leak fuel. Leaking fuel near an ignition source can start a fire.

Dealers inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and replace it as needed at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 24V763000, reported 14 October 2024, about 720,810 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Engine: internal mechanical parts (connecting rod bearings)

Vehicles: Certain 2016 and 2018-2019 Honda Pilot, 2017 and 2019 Ridgeline, 2018-2019 Odyssey, 2015-2020 Acura TLX and 2016-2020 Acura MDX vehicles.

Because of a manufacturing error, an engine connecting rod bearing can wear and seize, damaging the engine. A damaged engine may run poorly or stall while driving, raising the risk of a crash, fire or injury.

Dealers inspect the engine and repair or replace it as needed at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 23V751000, reported 13 November 2023, about 248,999 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Reading the rest of a Honda VIN

Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Honda assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.

See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.

Where the VIN is on a Honda

On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
