Jeep VIN decoder
Decode any Jeep VIN for manufacturer specifications and NHTSA safety recall campaigns, and see which World Manufacturer Identifiers NHTSA has on record for Jeep.
Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.
Jeep WMI codes
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 55 of them for Jeep. These codes are registered to FCA US LLC, which builds Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge and Ram vehicles, so the list covers all of those brands. They were issued across 3 countries: Japan, Thailand and United States (USA). A few carry no stated country. They span 5 vehicle types, listed separately below.
The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.

Common Jeep models
Some of the Jeep models you are most likely to be decoding, as NHTSA spells them. Recall searches by year, make and model need that exact spelling.
- Wrangler — NHTSA recall records generally file the plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe under Wrangler.
- Gladiator
- Grand Cherokee — Some NHTSA recall records list Grand Cherokee 4XE separately.
- Grand Cherokee L — vPIC lists Grand Cherokee L separately, but some NHTSA recall records file it under Grand Cherokee.
- Cherokee
- Compass
- Renegade
- Wagoneer
- Grand Wagoneer
- Wagoneer S
Notable Jeep recalls since 2018
A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Jeep vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.
Electrical system: wiring (cruise control)
Vehicles: Certain FCA US vehicles, including 2014-2018 Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and 2018 Jeep Wrangler; the campaign also covers models from 2014 to 2019 sold as Chrysler, Dodge and Ram (years vary by model).
If a short circuit occurs in the wiring while cruise control is in use, the driver may be unable to switch cruise control off with the brake pedal or the switch, and the vehicle may hold its speed or even accelerate. A vehicle that keeps going despite the driver's attempts raises the risk of a crash.
Dealers inspect the software and reflash the engine or powertrain control module at no charge; until then owners were told not to use cruise control.
Back-over prevention: rearview camera
Vehicles: Certain 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L and 2022-2023 Jeep Compass, Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer vehicles; the FCA US campaign also covers some Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager, Dodge Durango, and Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 and ProMaster vehicles (years vary by model).
A radio software error can stop the rearview camera image from appearing. Without that image the driver's view behind the vehicle is reduced, raising the risk of a crash.
The radio software is updated by a dealer or over the air, at no charge.
Suspension: front upper control arm ball joint
Vehicles: Certain 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L and 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles.
The upper control arm ball joint can separate from the steering knuckle, letting the wheel fall outward. That causes a loss of vehicle control and raises the risk of a crash.
Dealers replace the upper control arm pinch bolts at no charge.
Electrical system: high-voltage traction battery
Vehicles: Certain 2020-2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid vehicles. Vehicles already recalled for the same problem under 23V-787 and 24V-720 need this new remedy.
The high-voltage battery can fail internally and start a fire while the vehicle is parked or being driven. A vehicle fire increases the risk of injury.
Dealers update the high-voltage battery software and replace the battery as needed at no charge; until the repair is done, owners are told to park outside and away from buildings and not to charge the vehicle.
Power train: power transfer unit
Vehicles: Certain 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokee vehicles.
The power transfer unit can fail. A failed unit can cause a loss of drive power or let the vehicle roll away, raising the risk of a crash or injury.
Dealers will update the drivetrain control module, power transfer unit and electronic park brake software and replace the power transfer unit as needed at no charge; NHTSA's record says the final remedy was not yet available, with interim letters mailed first.
Reading the rest of a Jeep VIN
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Jeep assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.
See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.
Where the VIN is on a Jeep
On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
