Tesla VIN decoder

Decode any Tesla VIN for manufacturer specifications and NHTSA safety recall campaigns, and see which World Manufacturer Identifiers NHTSA has on record for Tesla.

Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.

Tesla WMI codes

The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 4 of them for Tesla. They were issued in United States (USA). They span 3 vehicle types, listed separately below.

The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.

Common Tesla models

Some of the Tesla models you are most likely to be decoding, as NHTSA spells them. Recall searches by year, make and model need that exact spelling.

  • Model 3
  • Model Y
  • Model S
  • Model X
  • Cybertruck

Notable Tesla recalls since 2018

A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Tesla vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.

Electrical system: instrument panel display

Vehicles: Certain 2012-2023 Tesla Model S, 2016-2024 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, 2019-2024 Model Y and 2024 Cybertruck vehicles.

The brake, park and anti-lock brake warning lights on the instrument panel are shown in a font that is too small, so the vehicles do not meet federal brake standards FMVSS 105 and 135. Warnings that are hard to read raise the risk of a crash.

NHTSA campaign 24V051000, reported 30 January 2024, about 2,193,869 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Driver assistance: Autosteer software

Vehicles: 2012-2023 Tesla Model S, 2016-2023 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles equipped with any version of Autosteer released before the remedy.

The prominence and scope of Autosteer's driver controls may not be enough to prevent misuse of this SAE Level 2 driver-assistance feature. A driver who does not stay responsible for driving may be unprepared to take over, or may not notice that Autosteer has switched off, raising the risk of a crash.

NHTSA campaign 23V838000, reported 12 December 2023, about 2,031,220 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Latches: hood latch

Vehicles: Certain 2021-2024 Tesla Model 3, Model S and Model X and 2020-2024 Model Y vehicles.

The hood latch assembly may fail to detect that the hood is unlatched after it has been opened. An unlatched hood can fly open while driving and block the driver's view, raising the risk of a crash.

NHTSA campaign 24V554000, reported 24 July 2024, about 1,849,638 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Visibility: power windows

Vehicles: Certain 2017-2022 Tesla Model 3, 2020-2022 Model Y and 2021-2022 Model S and Model X vehicles.

The automatic reversal system on the power windows may not react correctly after detecting an obstruction, so the vehicles do not meet federal power-window standard FMVSS 118. A closing window can pinch an occupant with too much force before reversing, increasing the risk of injury.

NHTSA campaign 22V702000, reported 19 September 2022, about 1,096,762 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Body: exterior trim (light bar panel)

Vehicles: Certain 2024-2025 Tesla Cybertruck vehicles.

The light bar can delaminate and come off the vehicle. A detached light bar becomes a road hazard for other drivers and raises the risk of a crash.

NHTSA campaign 25V170000, reported 18 March 2025, about 46,096 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Reading the rest of a Tesla VIN

Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Tesla assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.

See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.

Where the VIN is on a Tesla

On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
