Mitsubishi VIN decoder
Decode any Mitsubishi VIN for manufacturer specifications and NHTSA safety recall campaigns, and see which World Manufacturer Identifiers NHTSA has on record for Mitsubishi.
Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.
Mitsubishi WMI codes
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 22 of them for Mitsubishi. NHTSA's list includes codes from Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus, a truck maker that is a separate company from Mitsubishi Motors. They were issued across 5 countries: Australia, Japan, Portugal, Thailand and United States (USA). They span 4 vehicle types, listed separately below.
The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.

Common Mitsubishi models
Some of the Mitsubishi models you are most likely to be decoding, as NHTSA spells them. Recall searches by year, make and model need that exact spelling.
- Outlander — NHTSA recall records list the plug-in hybrid separately as Outlander PHEV.
- Outlander Sport
- Eclipse Cross
- Mirage
- Mirage G4
- Lancer
Notable Mitsubishi recalls since 2018
A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Mitsubishi vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.
Back over prevention: rearview camera software
Vehicles: Certain 2022-2024 Mitsubishi Outlander and 2023-2025 Outlander PHEV vehicles. This campaign replaces and expands recall 23V-345.
A software error in the infotainment system can make the rearview camera image freeze or not appear, so the vehicles do not meet federal rear-visibility standard FMVSS 111. A missing rear view raises the risk of a crash.
Dealers update the infotainment software at no charge; vehicles repaired under 23V-345 need the new remedy.
Visibility: windshield wiper linkage
Vehicles: Certain 2011-2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport vehicles.
Water can seep in between the hood and windshield and corrode the ball joint of the front wiper linkage, which can then come apart and stop the wipers. Losing the wipers reduces visibility and raises the risk of a crash.
Dealers replace the wiper link rod and wiper motor crank arm at no charge.
Body: liftgate gas springs
Vehicles: Certain 2014-2020 Mitsubishi Outlander and 2018-2022 Outlander PHEV vehicles. This campaign expands recall 25V-507.
The liftgate gas spring cylinders can corrode and lose pressure. A cylinder can then rupture or the liftgate can drop unexpectedly, raising the risk of injury.
Dealers replace the left and right liftgate gas springs at no charge.
Power train: transmission control software
Vehicles: Certain 2019-2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport vehicles with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and a mechanical key ignition.
A software error in the transmission control unit can wrongly lower the gear ratio at high speed, which can stall the engine. An engine stall raises the risk of a crash.
Dealers update the transmission control unit software at no charge.
Forward collision avoidance: brake hydraulic unit software
Vehicles: Certain 2017-2018 Mitsubishi Outlander vehicles with adaptive cruise control or an electric parking brake, 2018 Outlander Sport vehicles with forward collision mitigation, and 2018 Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross vehicles.
Incorrect software in the brake hydraulic unit control module can keep automatic emergency braking, anti-lock brakes, stability control or brake auto hold from stepping in when needed. That raises the risk of a crash.
Dealers update the hydraulic unit control module software at no charge.
Reading the rest of a Mitsubishi VIN
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Mitsubishi assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.
See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.
Where the VIN is on a Mitsubishi
On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
