Mazda VIN decoder

Decode any Mazda VIN for manufacturer specifications and NHTSA safety recall campaigns, and see which World Manufacturer Identifiers NHTSA has on record for Mazda.

Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.

Mazda WMI codes

The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 11 of them for Mazda. They were issued across 3 countries: Japan, Mexico and United States (USA). They span 3 vehicle types, listed separately below.

The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.

Common Mazda models

Some of the Mazda models you are most likely to be decoding, as NHTSA spells them. Recall searches by year, make and model need that exact spelling.

  • Mazda3 — NHTSA recall records spell it MAZDA3; the same applies to Mazda6.
  • CX-30
  • CX-5
  • CX-50
  • CX-70
  • CX-90
  • MX-5
  • CX-9
  • Mazda6
  • CX-3

Notable Mazda recalls since 2018

A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Mazda vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.

Engine: powertrain control software

Vehicles: Certain 2018-2019 Mazda CX-5 and Mazda6 and 2019 Mazda3 vehicles.

A software error in the powertrain control module can make the engine stall. An unexpected stall raises the risk of a crash.

Dealers reprogram the powertrain control module software at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 19V497000, reported 27 June 2019, about 262,220 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Back-over prevention: rearview camera

Vehicles: Certain 2014-2018 Mazda3 and 2016-2021 CX-3 vehicles.

The rearview camera image can flicker or appear distorted. A poor camera image reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle and raises the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers inspect and replace the rearview camera as needed and install a seal on the wiring harness, at no charge; NHTSA's record says owner letters went out in stages, the last expected by May 2025.

NHTSA campaign 23V487000, reported 14 July 2023, about 236,100 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Fuel system: fuel pump

Vehicles: Certain 2018 Mazda3 and Mazda6, 2019 CX-3, 2018-2019 MX-5, CX-5 and CX-9, and 2019-2020 Mazda2 vehicles.

The impeller inside the low-pressure fuel pump can crack and deform, which can make the pump fail. A failed pump can stall the engine and raise the risk of a crash.

Dealers replace the fuel pump at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 21V875000, reported 12 November 2021, about 121,038 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Steering: power steering gear

Vehicles: Certain 2024 Mazda CX-90 vehicles.

Because of an assembly problem with the worm gear in the steering system, power steering assist can be lost suddenly. Losing assist while driving raises the risk of a crash.

Dealers replace the spring that engages the worm gear and regrease the gear teeth at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 24V022000, reported 18 January 2024, about 43,454 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking

Vehicles: Certain 2019-2020 Mazda3 vehicles.

The Smart Brake System can falsely detect an obstacle while the vehicle is moving and apply the brakes hard, bringing the car to a sudden stop. An unexpected stop raises the risk of a crash.

Dealers update the Smart Brake System software, and some vehicles also get an instrument cluster software update or replacement and a new owner's manual, at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 19V907000, reported 19 December 2019, about 35,390 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Reading the rest of a Mazda VIN

Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Mazda assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.

See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.

Where the VIN is on a Mazda

On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
