Land Rover VIN decoder
Decode any Land Rover VIN for manufacturer specifications and NHTSA safety recall campaigns, and see which World Manufacturer Identifiers NHTSA has on record for Land Rover.
Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.
Land Rover WMI codes
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 3 of them for Land Rover. They were issued in United Kingdom (UK). They span 2 vehicle types, listed separately below.
The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.
Passenger Car 1 code
| WMI | Registered entity | Country |
|---|---|---|
| SAJ | JAGUAR LAND ROVER LIMITED | United Kingdom (UK) |
Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV) 2 codes
| WMI | Registered entity | Country |

| SAD | JAGUAR LAND ROVER LIMITED | United Kingdom (UK) |
| SAL | JAGUAR LAND ROVER LIMITED | United Kingdom (UK) |

Notable Land Rover recalls since 2018
A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Land Rover vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.
Air bags: driver air bag clockspring connector
Vehicles: Certain 2020-2026 Land Rover Defender, 2021-2026 Discovery and 2022-2026 Range Rover vehicles.
The connector on the clockspring for the driver air bag can corrode, so the air bag may not deploy as intended. That raises the risk of injury in a crash.
Dealers apply a protective lubricant gel to the driver air bag connector terminals at no charge.
Electrical system: mild-hybrid DC-DC converter
Vehicles: Certain 2019-2024 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, 2020-2024 Range Rover and Defender, 2021-2024 Range Rover Velar and Discovery, 2020-2023 Range Rover Evoque and 2020 Discovery Sport mild-hybrid vehicles; the campaign also covers Jaguar E-Pace and F-Pace vehicles.
Under heavy electrical demand the DC-DC converter can be overloaded and stop working, which ends charging of the 12-volt system. The vehicle can then lose all drive power and exterior lighting, raising the risk of a crash.
Dealers update the central software at no charge; NHTSA's record says interim letters were mailed June 17, 2026, with more to follow once the final remedy is ready. Campaign 26V599000 later expands this recall.
Seat belts: automatic locking retractors
Vehicles: Certain 2020-2022 Land Rover Defender and Discovery, 2020-2021 Discovery Sport and Range Rover Velar, 2021 Range Rover and 2022 Range Rover Sport vehicles (years vary by model).
The automatic locking feature of the seat belt retractors can switch off too early, so a child seat held by the belt may not stay secure. An unsecured child seat raises the risk of injury in a crash.
Dealers inspect the seat belt assemblies and replace them as needed at no charge.
Back over prevention: rearview camera
Vehicles: Certain 2018-2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport vehicles with the surround camera system. These vehicles were also recalled under 24V-023 for the same problem.
Water can get into the rearview camera, so the image may not appear or may be distorted, and the vehicles do not meet federal rear-visibility standard FMVSS 111. Reduced rear visibility raises the risk of a crash.
Dealers inspect the camera and either reseal it or replace and calibrate it, at no charge; vehicles repaired under 24V-023 need the new remedy.
Engine: cam carrier oil channel
Vehicles: Certain 2019-2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, 2020-2023 Range Rover and Defender, 2022-2023 Discovery and 2023 Range Rover Velar vehicles.
An oil channel in the engine cam carrier may be blocked, which can cause an oil leak. Leaking oil near an ignition source raises the risk of a fire.
Dealers inspect the engine cam carrier and replace it and related parts as needed at no charge.
Reading the rest of a Land Rover VIN
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Land Rover assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.
See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.
Where the VIN is on a Land Rover
On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
