GMC VIN decoder
Paste the 17-character VIN from your GMC truck, SUV or van to see how General Motors registered it with NHTSA: model year, model, body style, engine, drivetrain and assembly plant, plus every safety recall NHTSA lists for that year and model. Free, no signup.
Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.
GMC WMI codes
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 21 of them for GMC: each code below is one whose NHTSA record lists GMC as a make. All of these codes are registered to General Motors. A few are also listed for other makes, such as Pontiac, Saab and Suzuki. They were issued across 3 countries: Canada, Mexico and United States (USA). They span 5 vehicle types, listed separately below.
The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.

Common GMC models
Some of the GMC models you are most likely to be decoding, as NHTSA spells them. Recall searches by year, make and model need that exact spelling.
- Sierra — vPIC lists Sierra and Sierra HD; NHTSA recall records use Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500.
- Sierra HD
- Canyon
- Yukon
- Yukon XL
- Acadia
- Terrain
- Savana
- Hummer EV Pickup
- Hummer EV SUV — Some NHTSA recall records list it as Hummer EV.
Notable GMC recalls since 2018
A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering GMC vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.
Service brakes: brake assist vacuum pump
Vehicles: Certain 2014-2018 GMC Sierra and 2015-2018 GMC Yukon vehicles; the GM campaign also covers Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade models (years vary by model).
The vacuum pump that powers the brake assist can lose output over time. Less assist means more pedal effort and longer stopping distances, raising the risk of a crash.
Dealers reprogram the electronic brake control module at no charge.
Engine: 6.2L V8 connecting rods and crankshaft
Vehicles: Certain 2021-2024 GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles with the 6.2L V8 gas engine; the campaign also covers Chevrolet and Cadillac models with that engine.
Manufacturing defects in the connecting rods or crankshaft can damage the engine and make it fail, which raises the risk of a crash.
Dealers inspect the engine and repair or replace it as needed. Engines that pass get higher-viscosity oil, a new oil filter and oil fill cap, and an owner's manual update, all at no charge.
Latches: power tailgate release switch
Vehicles: Certain 2020-2024 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks with power-release tailgates; the campaign also covers the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500.
Water can get into the tailgate's electronic release switch and short it, unlatching the tailgate while the truck is parked. If it then opens while driving, unsecured cargo can fall into the road.
Owners are told to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving; dealers replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies at no charge.
Exterior lighting: daytime running lights
Vehicles: Certain 2022-2023 GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles; the GM campaign also covers Buick, Cadillac and Chevrolet models from 2020 to 2023 (years vary by model).
The daytime running lights may stay on when the headlights are on, which can cause glare and reduce visibility. NHTSA's record says these vehicles do not meet the federal lighting standard.
The body control module software is updated by a dealer or over the air at no charge.
Reading the rest of a GMC VIN
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. GMC assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.
See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.
Where the VIN is on a GMC
On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
