Genesis VIN decoder
Paste the 17-character VIN from your Genesis sedan or SUV to see how Hyundai registered it with NHTSA: model year, model, body style, engine, drivetrain and assembly plant, plus every safety recall NHTSA lists for that year and model. Free, no signup.
Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.
Genesis WMI codes
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 4 of them for Genesis: each code below is one whose NHTSA record lists Genesis as a make. All four codes are registered to Hyundai companies. KMT is listed for Genesis only; the other three also cover Hyundai. They were issued across 2 countries: South Korea and United States (USA). They span 2 vehicle types, listed separately below.
The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.
Passenger Car 2 codes

| KMH | HYUNDAI MOTOR CO | South Korea |
| KMT | HYUNDAI MOTOR CO | South Korea |
Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV) 2 codes

| KMU | HYUNDAI MOTOR CO | South Korea |
Genesis or Hyundai Genesis?
Before Genesis became a separate brand, the Genesis sedan was sold as a Hyundai. NHTSA's recall records list the 2015 and 2016 cars as the Hyundai Genesis and the 2017 car as the Genesis G80, so check recalls for an older car under Hyundai.
Common Genesis models
Some of the Genesis models you are most likely to be decoding, as NHTSA spells them. Recall searches by year, make and model need that exact spelling.
- G70
- G80
- G90
- GV60
- GV70 — Some NHTSA recall records list the electric version separately as GV70 Electrified.
- GV80
Notable Genesis recalls since 2018
A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Genesis vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.
Seat belts: front anchors
Vehicles: Certain 2023-2026 Genesis G90 vehicles; the campaign also covers the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Santa Fe.
The driver and front passenger seat belt anchors may come loose, so the belt will not restrain the occupant properly in a crash.
Dealers inspect the anchors and reinforce or replace them as needed at no charge.
Electrical system: integrated charging control unit
Vehicles: Certain 2023-2025 Genesis GV60 and GV70 Electrified vehicles and some G80 Electrified vehicles; the campaign also covers the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.
The integrated charging control unit can be damaged and stop charging the 12-volt battery, which can cause a loss of drive power and raise the risk of a crash.
Dealers inspect the unit and its fuse, replace them as needed and update the unit's software at no charge. This campaign replaces the earlier 24V-204, and vehicles repaired under it need the new repair.
Fuel system: fuel pipe connection
Vehicles: Certain 2021-2025 Genesis G80 and GV80, 2022-2026 GV70 and 2023-2025 G90 vehicles.
Fuel can leak where the fuel pipe connects to the fuel rail, raising the risk of a fire.
Dealers inspect the connection and tighten it or replace the fuel pipe as needed at no charge.
Electrical system: starter solenoid
Vehicles: Certain 2017-2019 Genesis G80 and G90 and 2019 Genesis G70 vehicles; the campaign also covers the 2015-2016 sedan sold as the Hyundai Genesis.
Water can get into the starter solenoid and short it, which can start an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
Owners are told to park outside and away from buildings until the repair is done; dealers install a relay kit in the engine junction box at no charge.
Reading the rest of a Genesis VIN
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Genesis assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.
See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.
Where the VIN is on a Genesis
On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
