Acura VIN decoder

Paste the 17-character VIN from your Acura SUV or sedan to see how Honda registered it with NHTSA: model year, model, body style, engine, drivetrain and assembly plant, plus every safety recall NHTSA lists for that year and model. Free, no signup.

0/17

Enter all 17 characters. The decoder reads the make, model and year from the whole VIN, not just the first three characters.

Acura WMI codes

The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. NHTSA lists 11 of them for Acura: each code below is one whose NHTSA record lists Acura as a make. All of these codes are registered to Honda companies. 3HD is also listed for Honda; the rest are listed for Acura only. They were issued across 3 countries: Canada, Mexico and United States (USA). A few carry no stated country. They span 3 vehicle types, listed separately below.

The country shown is where the identifier was issued, which usually but not always matches where a given vehicle was assembled. The eleventh character identifies the specific plant. A single WMI can cover more than one vehicle type, so some codes appear in more than one table.

Common Acura models

Some of the Acura models you are most likely to be decoding, as NHTSA spells them. Recall searches by year, make and model need that exact spelling.

  • MDX — Some NHTSA recall records list Type S and hybrid versions separately, such as MDX Type S.
  • RDX
  • Integra
  • TLX
  • ADX
  • ZDX

Notable Acura recalls since 2018

A few of the largest or most serious recent safety recalls covering Acura vehicles. They are examples, not a complete list: a single model year can have a dozen campaigns. A recall on the model does not mean it is still open on a particular car, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, or see every campaign for a year and model with our recall lookup.

Fuel system: fuel pump

Vehicles: Certain Acura ILX, MDX, MDX Hybrid, RDX, RLX, TLX and NSX vehicles from model years 2013 to 2023 (years vary by model); the campaign also covers many Honda models.

The fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail, which can stall the engine while driving and raise the risk of a crash.

Dealers replace the fuel pump module at no charge. This campaign expands two earlier ones, 20V-314 and 21V-215.

NHTSA campaign 23V858000, reported 19 December 2023, about 2,490,460 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Steering: steering gearbox

Vehicles: Certain 2023-2025 Acura Integra and 2024-2025 Integra Type S vehicles; the campaign also covers Honda Civic, CR-V and HR-V models.

The steering gearbox may have been built incorrectly, causing extra internal friction that makes the car hard to steer and raises the risk of a crash.

Dealers replace the worm gear spring and redistribute or add grease as needed at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 24V744000, reported 4 October 2024, about 1,693,199 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Structure: rear subframe corrosion

Vehicles: Certain 2014-2020 Acura MDX vehicles sold in 22 states and the District of Columbia; the campaign also covers the Honda Pilot, Ridgeline and Passport.

The rear subframe can corrode where the suspension mounts to it, and rear suspension parts such as a control arm can then fail, causing a loss of control.

Dealers inspect the subframe, fit a reinforcement kit and repair or replace subframe parts as needed at no charge. NHTSA's record says interim letters went out first, with the final remedy expected in fall 2026.

NHTSA campaign 26V365000, reported 5 June 2026, about 965,561 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Air bags: front passenger seat weight sensor

Vehicles: Certain 2020 and 2022 Acura MDX, 2020-2022 RDX and 2020-2021 TLX vehicles; the campaign also covers many Honda models.

The front passenger seat weight sensor can crack and short circuit, so the passenger air bag may not be switched off when it should be. An air bag that deploys when it should not can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Dealers replace the seat weight sensors at no charge.

NHTSA campaign 24V064000, reported 1 February 2024, about 750,114 vehicles across every brand in the campaign.

Reading the rest of a Acura VIN

Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle — model, body style, engine, restraint system. Acura assigns that scheme itself and files it with NHTSA, which is why decoding requires a lookup rather than arithmetic. Character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, and character 11 is the assembly plant.

See how to read a VIN for the full breakdown, or model year codes for the position 10 table.

Where the VIN is on a Acura

On the driver's side dashboard, readable through the windshield, and on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. The door jamb sticker usually carries a scannable barcode, which is more reliable than transcribing 17 characters by eye — the decoder can read it with your camera.
